A look back at last night's game in the form of some noteworthy statistics...
19 years – we celebrated precisely 19 years since the opening of Madejski Stadium on Tuesday evening. It was 22nd August 1998 when the first fixture was played at our new home – a 3-0 win against Luton Town. We needed two hours of football to get over the line against the Lions on the anniversary of that game, but we made our way into the third round!
239 Madejski Men – two more Royals were added to the growing list of players to have worn the hooped shirts at Madejski Stadium last night, in the former of Danny Loader and goalscorer Leandro Bacuna. That’s a total of nine extra this season so far… Loader is one of five to have represented the Royals for the first time four our Academy, while Bacuna joins Mo Barrow, Vito Mannone and Pelle Clement as summer signings to have worn the blue and white on home turf.
3rd round, 4th year – our progress to round three of the Carabao Cup is the fourth consecutive year that we’ve made it to this stage. We went a step beyond last season and were eliminated at the fourth stage by Arsenal, while Derby and Everton knocked us out in the third round in each of the previous two years.
4 subs – it’s not uncommon for managers to ring wholesale changes mid-match in a pre-season fixture… but yesterday was the first time in our history that we have used four substitutes in a competitive fixture. The new rules of the competition allow teams to make an additional switch once the game goes to extra time – Pelle Clement, Mo Barrow and Tyler Blackett were all introduced before the end of the 90, and Danny Loader came on for goalscorer Leandro Bacuna during the additional 30.
46 Academy graduates – Omar Richards, Sam Smith, Andy Rinomhota and Axel Andresson had already taken forward our list of homegrown players this season with their appearances for the club… add to that Danny Loader, whose appearance from the bench continues that tally moving forward!
16 years old – Danny Loader joined a very exclusive club of footballers to have represented the Royals at the age of 16. Amongst that number are Steve Hetzke – who would play 261 league fixtures for us in a spell lasting over a decade – and most recently Jordan Obita, who debuted in the same competition back in 2010 and now has 162 appearances in all competitions for Reading. He also became the first permanent member of the Reading squad to play at Madejski Stadium who was born after the stadium was opened!
