One more match – and three more points at stake – before the international break. And our gaffer Jaap Stam is particularly keen to enter the rest-period on the back of a win when we visit Birmingham City this Saturday.
It has been a challenging start to the season, with a number of players sidelined through a variety of injuries in August… but we have still registered a few positive results with wins over Gillingham, Aston Villa and Millwall. And the manager believes that once we begin to get a fuller compliment of players to choose from and when our new arrivals are fully settled, we will begin to see the best from the team.
“It’s a very important game again,” Jaap said. “Everybody knows that the league is very important to us. These first few weeks have looked a bit like pre-season because we’ve had a lot of injuries… a lot of players have needed to come back and get fit. We’ve also had a couple of new players that have come into the club and they need to get used to our system.
"So we’re not playing consistently yet. We need to try and get into our shape and our rhythm so that we start to get more points.
“That’s what we are looking for, and sometimes you need a bit of time to build a team, to get everyone together and everyone fit in your squad so that you can be at your strongest. And then you have competition in your squad which is what we need.
“So on Saturday it’ll be important game – one that we want to win, and they will want to win as well. It’ll be tough to play over there, we know that. But we’ll give it our best shot.”
