Jaap Stam says he is hoping to use Tuesday night's Carabao Cup match against Gillingham as a 'fresh start' to the season.
While the Royals had Tiago Ilori sent off in a 2-0 opening day defeat against QPR at the weekend, Stam is aiming to get his side back on form as soon as possible with improvements in the days leading up to Tuesday's game.
He said: "Hopefully we can do better and keep working to improve for the next game, on Tuesday there's a game and on Saturday there's another very important game at home as well (against Fulham).
"Everybody knows the quality of the opposition that we need to play in the next couple of games so we need to do better. We're working on that, everybody knows that because we spoke a little bit about that after the game, and hopefully we can have a fresh start towards the game on Tuesday."
Our opponents got off to a sturdy start in League One at the weekend, taking a well-earned point away at last season's League Two champions Doncaster Rovers.
Stam is not taking the lower-league opposition for granted, though, insisting that Tuesday's match can be a springboard for better results in coming matches with a good performance and victory in front of a home crowd.
"In every game you want to do well, you want to get results. This game is a cup game, it's very important as well.
"Gillingham are the team that we're playing, it's not a team that's going to say 'we're only coming here to defend, let's see how it goes,' they're coming to get a result as well, which is normal.
"We want to win as well, by winning games the confidence is getting higher and getting bigger and bigger, so that's what we need to do."
