Reading Football Club are very pleased to announce that captain Paul McShane has added his signature to a contract extension that will keep him at the heart of our defence until the summer of 2019.
Our talismanic centre-half signed for the Royals back in 2015 and his current contract was set to expire at the end of the current campaign, but the club have acted fast to ensure the 31-year-old is still sporting the skipper’s armband for another couple of years.
Royals boss Jaap Stam said, “Macca entered the last year of his contract this season and it is important to ensure your experienced players remain part of your squad and help the club move forward.
“His mentality was so important to the team as a whole, as was his role in helping us play the ball out from the back – and I’m very pleased he has agreed to remain a key part of this squad and what we want to achieve at Reading.”
Before his arrival at Madejski Stadium, McShane played the vast majority of his career in the top flight for West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Hull City, having come through the youth ranks as an FA Youth Cup winner at Manchester United.
And Macca is also vastly experienced on the international scene, having made 33 appearances for the Republic of Ireland at senior level.
Handed the captaincy upon arrival at Reading, McShane has made 71(+4) appearances across two seasons in blue and white hoops, scoring four goals in total – notching the winners against both Rotherham and Wolves as well as a vital equaliser at home to Brighton last season to add to his FA Cup finish against his former employers West Brom the previous season.
But the best of the Wicklow-born defender’s work is done in and on the edges of his own penalty box, selflessly putting his body on the line to block, deflect, head or calmly pass the ball out of trouble in front of our own goalmouth.
A skilful centre-half who seamlessly adapted to Jaap Stam’s style of football and a leader, both on and off the pitch, McShane guided the side to a sixth-place finish in 2016-17 and we are thrilled to have secured his services for a further season!
Chief Executive Ron Gourlay said, “Aside from the seven summer signings we have made this summer, it has been our firm intention to secure the futures of key first team personnel – players who earned us so much success last season and whom we believe are integral in helping us achieve more in the future. Paul has been an outstanding captain for the club and we are delighted he has agreed to lead us into battle until 2019.”
Sporting Director Brian Tevreden added, “Anyone who watched Reading last season will have seen how important the leadership qualities of Macca are when a calm, experienced head is needed in the blood and thunder of Championship football. So it was very important to offer him this contract extension and keep him at the club for another two years to come.”
