Royals to travel to Stevenage in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round

Away trip to League Two opposition handed to Jaap Stam's Reading

4 December 2017

Ball number 33 was drawn out of the pot and Jaap Stam's Royals were handed an away Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie at League Two Stevenage.

Before 2011, the Royals had not met Stevenage before in any competition, but we were pitted against them twice in successive years in the FA Cup.

In 2010-11, a late Shane Long winner earned Brian McDermott's men a 2-1 Fourth Round win in Hertfordshire - Mikele Leigertwood had thundered the visitors into a first half lead before a leveller from Darius Charles looked like it might take the tie to a replay...before Long's 87th minute intervention!

Reading went on to beat Everton in the Fifth Round at Goodison Park and secure back-to-back quarter-final appearances before a narrow loss at Manchester City brought the cup run to an end.

The following season, Stevenage had their revenge - Charles scoring the only goal of the game at the Madejski to knock Reading out of the competition at the first hurdle.

Stevenage, who beat Swindon Town 5-2 in the Second Round, currently sit in 15th place in League Two - while the Royals are ciurrently positioned in 14th place in the Championship.
