Evans: “It's a tough task, but one we’re looking forward to”

Evans believes Reading mentality key to success...

Reading midfielder George Evans believes the strong mindset of the Reading squad has been key to the team’s success so far this campaign, with the Royals coming up against Barnsley on Saturday afternoon.

The Royals have two games in four days at Madejski Stadium coming up, but Evans believes the squad’s mentality of focusing on each individual game rather than being carried away by the bigger picture has helped them earn some impressive results so far this campaign and put them in a strong league position.

“It is a cliché in this league that anyone can beat anyone, but we don’t underestimate the opponents,” admitted Evans. “We know we need to make sure we perform to the best of our abilities in every game.

“We are in a strong position but we can’t take it for granted, we go into every game with that mind set aiming to get those three points.

“We’ve had a good home record this year and we’ve got a lot of games coming up, I think April will be a busy month, we like to take each game as it comes, one by one, and really focus on the next opponent.”

Evans sighted the Royals' trip to Oakwell back in the first few weeks of the season as a good example of the kind of mentality the Royals have built up under Jaap Stam.

The midfielder believes Reading showed two sides to their game that afternoon, as they took the lead in stylish fashion before working hard to hold onto the three points whilst a man down.

“The last time we played them our first 20 minutes were brilliant,” reflected Evans. “We settled into our rhythm really well and played some great football.

“We scored two early goals and then the grit and determination we showed for the rest of the game was fantastic. It’s a good together group this year and it has been great to be here.

“We’ve been working very hard on the training pitch this week, and have been doing a lot of shape work to see how we can expose the opponent. We’re putting a lot of hours of hard work in.

“Barnsley are a good team and they’ve still got some great players in their squad,” continued Evans. “I know one or two of the lads there, individually they have some really good players so it is going to be a tough task, but one we’re looking forward to.”
