Forward signs new deal at Madejski StadiumWe are delighted to confirm that Royals forward Yann Kermorgant has today penned a new contract, keeping him at Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2018!
After joining the club last January, the 35-year-old’s current deal was due come to a close at the end of the 2016/17 campaign – but now the Frenchman has committed to the Royals cause for another season.
Eight goals to date this term make Yann our joint-top goalscorer so far this season, and his tireless contribution at both ends of the field have played no small part in elevating us to third in the Championship.
Reading manager Jaap Stam said: “Yann has been very important for us throughout the season, with his experience and the quality that he has. He has made a big impact for us in the first half of the season and it is important for us as a team and a club to keep players with those qualities within the group.
“If you look at the team and how we are performing, Yann is a big part of that. He is enjoying himself – he has been scoring goals and he is important for the team in other ways as well. If you have players of that calibre in your squad, it is a good thing to sign them onto a new deal – players like Yann aren’t easy to replace. So I’m very happy that he has signed a new deal.”
The Royals became Yann’s fourth club in English football when he made the move from AFC Bournemouth a little over 12 months ago.
Originally from Vannes in Brittany, the striker represented his hometown side before continuing his career with Châtellerault, Grenoble and Stade Reims before making the move across the channel to join Leicester City in 2009.
A single season with the Foxes was followed by a loan spell with Ligue 1 club Arles-Avignon, before returning to England to join Charlton. He enjoyed a productive two-and-a-half years with the London club, earning promotion to the Championship with the Addicks in 2012, chipping in with a dozen goals that campaign.
And then in January 2014, AFC Bournemouth came calling for his services; he netted nine goals before the end of the campaign – including a hat-trick against Doncaster on his full debut – and then struck 15 times in his first full season as the Cherries lifted the Championship title to take a place in the Premier League!
After joining Reading last January, Yann netted his first two goals against former side Charlton in a thrilling 4-3 victory at the Valley – and this season he already has eight goals to his name.
Those goals have contributed to our fine position in the league standings; his first of the current campaign was an 89th-minute winner in Cardiff, and some of the more noteworthy contributions have been his equaliser and winner in our 3-2 turnaround at Bristol City, and a match-winning free-kick in our home game against Cardiff less than a fortnight ago.
Kermorgant already has 46 appearances in a Royals shirt to his name – his half-century could be reached as early as our televised fixture away at Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of this month.
And we’re delighted that number will keep on rising over the next year and a half after Yann today committed to remaining with us in Berkshire!
