Stam receives nomination for January Manager of the Month

9 February 2017

Gaffer shortlisted for monthly award

For the third time this season, Reading manager Jaap Stam has been shortlisted for the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month award.

After a January that saw us accumulate another 12 points towards our total and help to establish our position towards the top end of the table, the Royals boss has been nominated for the monthly gong.

2017 started in dramatic fashion, as we turned a 2-0 deficit into a late, late win against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.  And despite narrow defeats to QPR and Derby, the month finished off with three consecutive wins against Fulham, Cardiff and Birmingham as we collected nine points within the space of eight gruelling days.

It is the third time this season that the Dutchman has been named on the four-man shortlist after strong showings in September and November and, as ever, there is stiff competition to see who will be given the gong.

The other three contenders are as follows…

Paul Lambert (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
The Midlands club’s progression past Stoke and Liverpool in the FA Cup didn’t come at the expense of their Championship tally – Lambert guided them to victory against Barnsley and local rivals (and his former side) Aston Villa, as well as a commendable draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

Alex Neil (Norwich City)
After a particularly difficult Christmas period for the Canaries, Neil guided them to a trio of wins against Midlands sides Derby, Wolves and Birmingham – as well as taking Southampton to a replay in the FA Cup.  Defeat at languishing Rotherham was the only notable setback.

Neil Warnock (Cardiff City)
Like Reading, Warnock’s Cardiff collected a dozen points from the opening month of 2017 – Aston Villa, Bristol City, Burton Albion and Preston North End were all on the receiving end of the Bluebirds’ wins.  But they also left Brighton empty-handed, just four days before being defeated at Madejski Stadium.

The judging panel comprises former Ipswich Town manager George Burley, Sky Sports’ EFL League expert Don Goodman; EFL Marketing Director Drew Barrand, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery.

The winners of all the monthly awards from across the three EFL divisions will be announced at 6am on Friday 10th January.
