Right back Chris Gunter discusses the upcoming trip to Old Trafford

Reading defender Chris Gunter says he is looking forward to a chance for the Royals to test themselves against a top team in the Emirates FA Cup this Saturday.

The 27-year-old insisted that up until Monday the squad had been completely focused on the league, but were now excited to be able to turn their attention to a mouth-watering tie against Manchester United.

“It was important for us to focus on the league games following the draw, there’s been no talk about Manchester United until we came in after the Bristol City game," said the Welsh international.  "We’ve done well in the majority of our games recently and now we can look forward to Manchester United.

“Christmas and New Year is always a busy period in football, so it’s important that we’ve had essentially a week to recover from Monday’s game. We’ve done our normal recovery and then we’ve been focused on this game.

“The preparation has really been no different to any other game; we’ve spoken about things that they do, what we can do to try and hurt them and stop them. It’s been nice to have a near free week and good to be back on the training ground."

The Royals have reached the semi-final and quarter-final of the competition in the last two seasons respectively - he knows that that will be a tough prospect with such a difficult tie for their first fixture.

“We’ve done well over the last couple of years in the FA Cup," he continued.  "It was disappointing last season - we wanted to get back to Wembley again, but it’s a great competition and if you win a couple of games suddenly you can suddenly find yourself in the later stages of the tournament!

“We know it’s a tough game this weekend, but one where we’re excited to go and see where we’re at as a team.  It’s a good chance to go and test ourselves against a top team who are playing well at the moment.

"We want to go there, cause them problems and see what we can do!”
