Match-winner Yann lauds fighting spirit

Goalscorer Yann Kermorgant talks through an important win against Cardiff City

Reading striker Yann Kermorgant was delighted with the win over Cardiff City, getting the winning goal himself from a well-placed free kick.

It was Kermorgant who won the opportunity to strike a winner from a set-piece; he drew the foul from Sol Bamba on the edge of the area, before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Alan McGregor.

“It’s a free kick on the edge of the box, which is always a great opportunity to score," said the Frenchman.

"I’m really pleased I got the goal as we deserved the winner.  We have a few players who can step up to a free kick and put it in the back of the net, today it was my chance but the most important thing is to win.

“It’s a great result; it’s the kind of game you have to win at home when you’re pushing for a top six finish.

“It was a tough game, and we should have killed the game off, but then they equalised and it was another difficult game and at the end we had to dig in to keep the result.

“We analysed them ahead of the game and we could see that they play very direct. In the last 20 minutes they were 2-1 down and were playing long balls more.

"They even pushed a centre back up front to bring a more physical presence up top and we had to make a decision to press high or drop deep and fight for the long balls!"

As usual though, there'll be no time to dwell on another impressive result; the next match will be here imminently... a trip to Birmingham City.

“In the Championship you play almost every three days and you have no time to reflect on the results and whether you have won or lost," Yann explained.  "You have to move on and play the next one.

“It’s two wins in a row at home which is what we need, but now we need to move onto the next one - another tough game on Tuesday away at Birmingham.

“We are going to St Andrew's to get the three points, we have to keep believing in what we do, we are playing well at the moment, the last two games we have won, but before when we didn’t get the points I still think we didn’t play badly.

"So we just have to keep believing and carry on how we’re playing and I’m sure we’ll get more points.”
