Royals clinch late Lewis Grabban loan

31 January 2017

Bournemouth striker completes deadline day hat-trick for the Royals!

Reading Football Club are delighted to announce that striker Lewis Grabban has completed a loan switch from Bournemouth, putting pen to paper at the end of a very busy transfer deadline day in Berkshire to secure move to the Madejski until the end of the season.

The Cherries forward, who turned 29 earlier this month, became the club’s third deadline day acquisition and our fifth of this January transfer window when he arrived at Madejski Stadium this evening to complete a last minute loan from the south coast.

A much sought-after striker who has twice been part of promotion-winning sides and who has been playing Premier League football for the last two and a half years of his career, Grabban has now opted to join the Royals’ ranks for the remainder of our Championship campaign.

Croydon-born Grabban has scored 89 goals in 245 career starts to date and he could add to that tally when he becomes eligible to make his Royals debut when we visit Ipswich Town this weekend.

The pacy six foot frontman began his career at Crystal Palace, coming through the Selhurst Park ranks to make his debut at the age of 17 in a home win over Walsall in the League Cup.

After a short loan stint at Oldham, he scored his first professional goal for the Eagles in a 3-2 Championship win at West Brom in March 2007, before another loan spell north of the border with Motherwell in 2007-8.

Following a permanent move to Millwall that same season, he got off the mark with three goals in consecutive appearances for the Lions and in 2008-9 Grabban played an important part in helping Millwall reach the play-off final, beating Leeds over two legs in the semi-final only to lose to Scunthorpe United in the Wembley showpiece that year.

A move across London provided Grabban with loan spells at Brentford before the move to Griffin Park was made permanent in January 2011. But that summer he was on the move again to sign for Rotherham, scoring 21 goals across all competitions as a Miller.

League One Bournemouth brought Grabban to the south coast the following summer and, just as he had for Rotherham, he scored on his home debut – bagging in a 1-1 draw with MK Dons in August 2012. He scored 12 more that season as he guided the Cherries to automatic promotion to the Championship.

His fine goalscoring form was to continue in the second tier, scoring twice in an opening day win over Charlton and also bagging one of Bournemouth’s two in a 2-1 away win at the Madejski Stadium that December.

Grabban went on to notch an impressive 22 goals across the Cherries’ campaign that year, a record that prompted interest from Norwich City who signed the striker in the summer of 2014.

He scored on home debut once more in a 3-0 win for the Canaries against Watford at Carrow Road and Grabban had tallied 13 goals come the end of the season, earning City promotion to the Premier League in the process via a play-off final win against Middlesbrough.

His first top flight goal came in November 2015, the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal and little more than a year ago he returned to Bournemouth in a January transfer window homecoming to rejoin Eddie Howe’s side in the Premier League.

Tonight, Grabban has made another move to link up with Jaap Stam’s Royals in their bid for valuable points as our 2016-17 campaign enters its final third!

Chief Executive Nigel Howe said, “I am delighted that we have been able to add some extra fire power to the squad in the form of a proven goalscorer like Lewis. And I am very pleased that a striker in such high demand chose to come to join the Royals.”
