McShane on Friday night's abandonment, New Year's Eve and a trip to Bristol...Skipper Paul McShane managed just 30 seconds of the 45 minutes that were played against Fulham on Friday night, so is raring to go again on Monday at Ashton Gate.
"It was disappointing with the match being called off on Friday night," the skipper said. "Especially when you’re in the changing room getting yourself ready for the second half and you’re getting the adrenalin flowing through your veins.
"I’ve never experienced a game being called off I don't think - I’ve been part of a game where it should have been called off but wasn’t!
"I was for Middlesbrough and we were playing in a blizzard, we were playing in white and we couldn’t see each other and I think the ball was white too. It was a disaster. It finished 1-1 and it was just a dead game.
"And I think on Friday night, if the officials had waited five more minutes it might have been fine. But we've just got to just crack on with Bristol City on Monday now and look forward to the next game."
The Royals travel to Bristol City on Monday, hoping to kick off 2017 in fine style with a win and a performance to be proud of. "Bristol City will be another tough team, I say it every week but it's true.
"It would be good to start the New Year with a win. But they’ve got some good players and they’re a good side - when they came here we got the win but they will have gone away thinking they deserved more, so it’s going to be a tough one and it’s another one of those games where we have to be ready.
"Having played just 45 minutes of a game on Friday night, I suppose it’s better than a training session because we got some match experience. But it is what it is. You can’t think about what effect that abandoned game will have on the next one too much, we just need to prepare for Bristol now.
"And we’ll be training non-stop up until Monday now, so there'll be no celebrating the New Year for any of us. New Year's Eve is always an anti-climax for me anyway...I’ve had some bad New Year’s parties back in the days I could!
"Because we don’t have a game on New Year's Day, I might just see the New Year in and then go to bed. In fact, this could be the first time in a long time that I actually do see it in because it's not often that we've not had a game the very next day.
