Stam: Vitality and quality key against Cardiff

26 January 2017

Manager previews Bluebirds meeting

We’re in search of back-to-back home wins within a week.  Fulham were vanquished in midweek, and now Neil Warnock’s Cardiff provide the next hurdle this Saturday.

Royals gaffer Jaap Stam believes that the upcoming fixture will require the Royals to show a good blend of ability with the ball as well as a willingness to match their opponents from South Wales man for man.

“It’s another difficult team in how they play,” said the manager.  “They have good players, they have a certain physique, and they like to mix it up with their ability on the ball as well.

“They work very hard to get results, so it’s not going to be easy.  We know that.  But we talk about that before every game, because every game is difficult and requires you to work very hard.

“We can do that as well, and if we can combine that with the quality we showed against Fulham, then hopefully we can get a result again.”

And while the Dutchman has no doubts about the desire and effort that his troops will be putting into the game, he hopes that more positivity from the home support will help the players to tap into those extra reserves of energy when it really counts.

“If the fans are doing it like they did against Fulham, it helps you out as a player and as a team,” continued Jaap.  “You feel it – you get that extra boost going forward or to defend, to work a bit harder.

“Of course we always need to work hard.  But that support helps you to get over the edge.  We need that every game – they were great against Fulham so hopefully they will keep that up on Saturday.”
