Vitesse visit on Saturday for meeting in Wycombe

24 July 2017

They will become our fifth overseas opponent of the off-season roster – the second from the Netherlands along with Sparta Rotterdam, two Belgian sides in KV Kortrijk and Cercle Brugge and a Turkish team in Genclerbirligi.

Vitesse come into the fixture on the back of one of their most successful ever seasons.  Fifth in the Eredivisie represented a good finish – indeed third is the best they have ever managed in their long history – but even better was lifting the KNVB Cup for the first time in their history.

In the final, two goals against AZ from former Norwich front-man Ricky van Wolfswinkel – taking his tally to 23 for the season – was enough to secure a 2-0 win and the title.  Fittingly, the final took place a fortnight before the 125th anniversary of the club’s foundations.

Precisely seven days after we kick off against the Dutch club, our season will begin at Loftus Road against Queens Park Rangers – later that evening, Vitesse contest the Johan Cruijff Shield (the Dutch equivalent of the Community Shield) against league victors Feyenoord.

So it’ll be another important preparatory game as we look to put the finishing touches onthe plans for the opening weekend.
