Swift joins us in Holland!

Swift on the U21 Euros, joining the squad again and the season ahead...

Apologies, this video is unvailable.

John Swift has joined the travelling Royals squad in Holland, following his summer break.

The midfielder is starting his pre-season programme later than other members of the squad because of his time away with England's Under-21s, in the European Championship last month.

The Young Lions made it through to the semi-finals of the tournament in Poland, but agonisingly went out on penalties to eventual winners Germany after their 2-2 draw.

Speaking on his return to Oosterbeek, where he travelled just after he had signed for the Royals this time last year, Swift said: "This was a big experience for me last year, but it's a lot easier for me this year knowing everybody, and hopefully getting straight back into training.

"The Euros were a great experience to be involved in, it was my last trip away with the 21s as well, but it was another bad ending to be honest.

"I think we deserved better than what we got. The boys did really well and for a few of them, it was their last trip as well, same as me.

"It was a disappointing end, but it was a great experience to be out there."

Round-up: What the boys have had to say so far in Holland!

Swift will re-join the Royals' squad in training immediately following his three week break after the Euros, and he feels he will still be sharp on the training pitch after his relatively short time off.

Speaking more broadly about our prospects for the upcoming campaign, Swift believes narrowly missing out on promotion last season will be a catalyst for the squad to go out and aim for one better this time around.

"I think the play-offs are massive," he elaborated. "I think the fire is that everyone wants to get back there, hopefully we can do the same as last season and really push on.

"Start well and that'll give us a good platform to carry on and re-do what we did last year.

"I haven't had too long off so it should be quite easy for me to get straight back into training. Obviously it'll take a couple of sessions to get up to speed, but fitness wise I feel good and kept myself ticking over the break.

"Hopefully I'll get straight back in, I feel good."

The Royals continue their training schedule in Holland ahead of their second back-to-back friendlies on Saturday, this time taking on Sparta Rotterdam and Cercle Brugge.
