It has been some year for Liam Kelly! The 2015-16 season ended with a goal for our mercurial midfielder…scored for Bath City in the National League South in a 1-1 draw with Oxford City!
His last minutes of action that season were played out at Court Place Farm. Who would have imagined that the following season he would be gracing the hallowed turf of the Emirates, Old Trafford and Wembley as a key member of the Royals’ promotion challenge in the Championship!
“It’s been a whirlwind 18 months, but I guess that’s football!” he said having penned a new three-year deal at the club – his third contract within the space of a year.
“That sort of thing can happen in football and I’m just taking every moment as it comes…and enjoying every minute.
“I didn’t expect to play as much as I did when I came into the squad at the start of last season – but I just took it all as it came it was good.
“So I’m very happy to have signed a new contract for the next three years – I’ve been here a long time now, so it’s really starting to feel like home!”
It certainly should be. Kelly has been a Royal since the age of 8 and he is now feeling comfortable as part of Jaap Stam’s first team midfield, ahead of what he hopes will be another successful season.
“We all believed that we could do what we did last season, with the way we played and the way the gaffer coached us – so I think it was only right that we finished third…what the gaffer did with us was unbelievable.
“We have all learned a lot and hopefully now we’re all a year on and know what he wants from us as players, we can push on.
“I had a nice break, some time to relax with the family and a few friends. But now we all feel really sharp in training, which has been high intensity all week.
“We’ve got a few friendly games to play now and that’s what pre-season is about, getting as many games as we can, getting into the flow of things before the season kicks off. But wverybody’s looking ready!”
