Gunter helps Wales to vital point in Serbia

Bionic man earns draw against table-toppers!

12 June 2017

Royals right-back Chris Gunter continued to defy belief as he completed yet another ninety minutes on Sunday night to help his country stay in the fight for a place in the World Cup Finals in Russia next summer.

Aaron Ramsey's outrageous chipped penalty gave Wales a first half and Gunter was at the heart of a defensive rearguard action as Chris Coleman's side strived to cling onto a victory that would have thrown Group D wide open.

But Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled with 17 minutes left, meaning Wales remain third in their group - four points behind Serbia and the Republic of Ireland with four games left.

Gunter's endurance, consistency and phenomenal physical resilience is a story in itself. The draw in Belgrade was Gunter's 58th game for club and country this season, not to mention the half he played against Fulham in the fog-affected fixture at the end of December.

The draw added another to his ever-increasing tally of 79 caps - which is now just 13 fewer than Neville Southall who tops the list and six fewer than Gary Speed who is second.

He has now made an astonishing 54 consecutive appearances for Wales , a run that stretches all the way back to October 2010 when he was unavailable through suspension to play in the 4-1 Euro 2012 qualifying loss to Switzerland.

In blue and white hoops, of course, 27-year-old Gunter played in every one of our 46 Championship matches this season as well as playing every minute of the three play-off matches.

He missed just eight minutes of action across the course of the league campaign and, add to that the six 90 minute appearances he made for Wales against Moldova, Austria, Georgia, Serbia and Republic of Ireland as well as last night's 1-1 draw, and his three cup appearances for the Royals, his overall tally of minutes this season stands at 5,180.

Gunter's appearance data from the last four seasons...
2016-17 | 58 (49 Championship, 2 EFL Cup, 1 FA Cup, 6 international)
2015-16 - 66 (44 Championship, 5 FA Cup, 3 EFL Cup, 14 international)
2014-15 - 51 (38 Championship, 4 FA Cup, 3 EFL Cup, 6 international)
2013-14 - 54 (44 Championship, 1 FA Cup, 1 EFL Cup, 8 international)
