“It has been a good summer – it took a while to process the whole season, especially the end which was disappointing,” said Joey van den Berg, returning to Reading after the off-season break – reflecting on a sad end to a hugely positive campaign last year.
“But we’re back at it and I’m really excited to step into the next season.
“I’ve been watching a bit of the Confederations Cup on television, and you feel a little bit like you want to play again! But I had a good break with family and friends.
“This is my first interview of the season and we can mention it… but then it must be over. It’s in the past and we can’t change anything any more – best wishes to Huddersfield, but we have to be focused again on ourselves and our season.
“So enough said about last season – let’s go and write another chapter in this one!”
Replicating last year’s success – or going one better – won’t be easy. The Royals set the bar high last year… but Joey hopes that the team can push on once again and see what can be achieved.
“It’s not going to be easy. It might be more difficult than last year because now people know what we do and what our intentions are.
“So it’s for us to step it up a little bit more, and try to surprise them again. There are a lot of good teams in the league, same as last year, and we have to go with it and give it all we’ve got. But nothing comes from itself – we really have to work hard.”
