Macca | "We have to raise the bar again!"

The skipper discusses pre-season and looks ahead to the new season

29 June 2017

"It's going to be an even better pre-season this year. We're really looking forward to getting back into the swing of things and getting our fitness back up. I can't wait to get back out on the pitch and start working hard again" said skipper Paul McShane looking ahead to a busy few weeks of training.

"We didn't really get much time off, it went by pretty quickly. I got to New York and then Ibiza for Stepen Quinn's wedding, I had a coaching course as well but now I'm back here ready to go!

"Sometimes I struggle on days off to be honest, I don't know what to do with myself, but because it was such a short break I was always doing something, I wasn't sat idle for too long!

"We're back to it now...back to business. And now that we're back in there's definitely a different feel about the place.

"The manager used the pre-season tour in Holland last season as an opportunity to get his ideas across. Now we know his game plan and style of play, I'd say it's going to be an even better pre-season this year!"

Reflecting on an agonisingly end to last season, the Royals centre-half said, "It's how you use those disappointing moments. And it was very disappointing - there's no getting away from that.

"But it's how you react to those moments that reallly define your character. Everyone seems to be in good spirits here having put Wembley to bed. We've just got to keep moving forward.

"We raised the bar last year and now we've got to raise it again. That's got to be the ambition, to go one step further. It would be a brilliant achievement!

"Last season if you'd said we'd be in the play-offs people might have laughed at you. But if you say this year we're aiming for the top two, however hard it will be, we have to make it a realistic goal."
