Reading FC Women have finished the FA WSL Spring Series in sixth place, following a 1-1 draw away to Sunderland on Saturday.
The Royals could have gone above the Black Cats with victory, but the hosts came from behind to take a draw in the second period.
Nevertheless it represents a good standing at the end of the eight-match interim series; Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool once again dominated the top four, and Sunderland were the only other side to finish above Reading.
Reading could have gone ahead even earlier at the Hetton Centre. Kirsty McGee, Jade Moore and Kirsty Linnett all saw attempts fly wayward.
But the scoring was opened on the half-hour mark, as Melissa Fletcher latched onto Mandy van den Berg’s forward ball to put Reading into the lead.
Linnett was unable to capitalise on another one-on-one chance before the break; that allowed the Wearsiders to draw level just 10 minutes after the interval, as Beverly Leon picked out the bottom corner.
The Royals had late chances to take the three points; Anissa Lahmari and Lauren Bruton both saw their efforts go astray.
A sixth-placed finish represents a good return for the Royals from their eight fixtures… and they’ll soon be back to action when the FA WSL 1 fixtures begin again for the 2017/18 campaign!
