The below letter was first published in Tuesday evening's matchday programme.Dear Bobby,
Like so many of our fans, we read your admirably honest and emotional message on social media late last week and, as a club, we felt compelled to offer you and your family the unequivocal support of supporters, staff and players at Reading Football Club in your battle with asthma.
You are a Royal. A record-breaking Royal.
We remember that breakaway goal at home to Millwall… the first of two for you and five in total that sunny afternoon at the very start of something so very special. We remember that top left hand corner finish you found at Turf Moor and the bottom right hand corner you brilliantly arrowed the ball into at Molineux to secure three of our 106 points that famous season. We remember you stripping down to your cycling shorts and hurling your kit – boots and all - into the jubilant away end at Leicester on an afternoon that has been indelibly written into our beloved club’s long and proud history.
Your playing days may be over, but you will always be a record-breaker. And we’ll always remember what you did for us as a club…the memories won’t fade fast in Reading. And now, you have a new chapter to write for yourself. Stay strong, Bobby!
Your extended family,
