Travel info for supporters aged 65 & over
In a meeting between Reading Football Club and Reading Buses earlier this week, it was agreed that the club will continue to subsidise bus travel for all our supporters aged 65 & over throughout the 2017-18 season!
To date, the Council offered its residents a concessionary bus pass scheme which has allowed fans aged 65 & over to travel to Madejski Stadium matchdays for free on Reading bus services. However the local Council announced earlier this year that, from Saturday 1st April – the date of our next home game against Leeds United - there will be changes to the validity of concessionary travel in the Reading Borough area which will see the subsidy removed to matchday fares.
The Council’s subsidy cuts come as a result of ‘budget pressures caused by unprecedented cuts in government funding and increased demands on services’ and this meant that for the remaining four home matches of the 2016-17 campaign and beyond, supporters aged 65+ would be required to pay a matchday fare of between £4 and £6 for a return ticket to and from Madejski Stadium on the special football services.
This was a change that was set to impact considerably on a number of Royals supporters and, feeling it was important to keep football affordable for our fans, Reading Football Club were proactive in ensuring that - in conjunction with Reading Buses - the club would cover the majority of a subsidy until the end of the current campaign. And now, we have agreed to continue to subsidise bus travel for those aged 65 & over throughout the course of next season. This will also apply to Stagecoach services.
This move means that those supporters aged 65 & over in possession of a concessionary travel pass will only have to pay £1 each way to get to and from the game, cutting the proposed full fare price by more than half for every home match remaining this season and throughout the entirety of 2017-18!
Reading Football Club Stadium Manager, Ray Booth, said “The matchday experience is vitally important to us as a club and we remain totally committed to making a visit to Madejski Stadium as affordable as possible for fans of all ages – and we were delighted to be able to help our supporters aged 65 & over get to the stadium for as little as possible to see the last four home games of the campaign.
“However, we were also acutely aware that this was an interim solution – so, as promised, we entered into new discussions with Reading Buses and as a club we are thrilled to be able to offer the same subsidy to our supporters throughout the course of next season!”
