The gaffer looks ahead to tonight's meeting with the Newcastle United...Reading manager Jaap Stam is hoping his side can put in a big performance when they welcome table topping Newcastle United to Madejski Stadium this evening, in a big game in the Sky Bet Championship.
The gaffer recognises the quality Rafa Benitez’s team possess and says Reading need to be aware of the Newcastle attacking threat.
“Every game that we play, we need to dig deep and work hard to be able to get the result,” said Stam. “Newcastle have got very good players, and they have a lot of quality.”
“We need to be aware of the threats they have especially going forward, and also look at the spaces they leave at times when they attack and try to take advantage of that.
“It is going to be a hard game because of the quality they have in that team,” Jaap continued. “They’ve invested a lot, but hopefully we can go out there and do well.”
Earlier in the season the Royals were defeated 4-1 at St James’ Park, but despite the loss, Stam says he was pleased with his team’s performance, with Reading undone by set-pieces in the North East.
Tuesday evening will see a bumper crowd at Madejski Stadium with Newcastle also set to bring over 4,000 fans to Berkshire. The manager is hoping the home supporters will be behind his side as they look to get a result against a strong opposition.
“When we played them at St James’ Park they made it very difficult for us especially from set pieces,” admitted Stam. “We need to be aware of that.
“We don’t want to be playing at home and the away fans are louder than the home fans. If the Reading fans that are here can be really behind the team then that gives the team an extra boost.
“I think it is good for the fans as well if the atmosphere is good,” he continued. “It will also give the away team a certain feeling. I am confident in the home fans that they will be behind us.”
