Royals to host Charlton or Boro in Premier League Cup

10 March 2017

U23s waiting to learn opponents in last 16

Reading’s Under-23 side have been drawn at home in the last 16 of the Premier League Cup, and will face either Charlton Athletic or Middlesbrough.

It all depends on who finishes second in Group F – Boro currently occupy the second qualification spot after they have completed all of their games, but they could be pipped by the Addicks on Sunday.

Charlton have one more game remaining, away at London rivals AFC Wimbledon – who held them to a 3-3 draw back in October.  But the Addicks will need to win against the Dons to claim the group runners-up spot from Boro this weekend.

All last-16 ties are scheduled to take place across the weekend of Friday 17th to Monday 20th March, but the exact date, kick-off time and venue will be arranged and announced in due course.

The Royals were the very first winners of the competition in its inaugural year, as our youngsters earned two-legged victory over Manchester City back in 2014.

In previous years, the competition has been a straight knock-out competition since the first round.  However this season, for the first time, we have played six group games to qualify for the knock-outs.

We met Stoke City, Birmingham City and Sheffield United home and away in a round-robin format, collecting 13 points from our six matches and finishing five points clear at the top of the Group H table.

And Martin Kuhl's side have a wait on our hands to find out who our opponents will be – we will announce the opponent, date and time of kick-off and match venue as soon as they are known.
