Reading U18s were narrowly beaten by West Ham on Saturday afternoon in Premeir League Merit Group AThe U18’s were edged out at home on Saturday by West Ham United in Merit Group A thanks to a late goal from Anthony Scully which was enough to win the game for the visitors at Hogwood.
Despite creating a number of chances in the first half the royals were unable to convert, and in a evenly contested game in Berkshire, it was the Hammers that made the decisive blow after what had been increased Reading pressure in the second period.
U18s coach David Dodds was not too displeased with his sides’ performance against West Ham but was left a little frustrated in the game the he feels could’ve gone either way.
Dodds said: “We started the game off quite well and had the majority of possession. We had a chance early on at the back post from a set piece. Harry Philby lost his marker well but couldn’t convert and put his effort inches over the bar.
“They defended well and looked dangerous on the counter attack. We had another good couple of chances, Ramarni Medford-Smith also went close for us in the first half from a corner with his shot just blocked on the line.
“Late in the game Tom Holmes had another chance as the box ball dropped for him in the box but was just unable to convert.
“Unfortunately for us West Ham broke on the counter late on to score what was and untidy goal from us for our point of view.
“Our pattern of platy was good but our movement in midfield was just too slow to break them down. We didn’t do quite enough on the day to break them down. I don’t think we were quite creative enough in the final third.
“It was frustrating though because we couldn’t get the goal I think if we had got one early on then we would’ve got more. Credit to West Ham they stuck at it and they had quite a young team on the day.”
