U23s to host Middlesbrough in Premier League Cup knockouts

14 March 2017

Royals face Boro at Adams Park in last 16

Reading U23s will host Middlesbrough in the round-of-16 knockout phase of the Premier League Cup on Monday 20th March at Adams Park in a 1pm kick-off.

The Royals, who lifted the Premier League Cup trophy back in 2013/14 in its inaugural season, will be looking to progress to the quarter final stage with a victory over Boro.

The outcome of the fixture will have to be decided on the day, with extra time and penalties to determine the winner if needed in High Wycombe.

Middlesbrough progressed from Group F in second position behind group winners Fulham picking up nine points in the process. During the group stage Boro picked up wins over Charlton and tasted victory both home and away to AFC Wimbledon to book their place in the knockout phase of the competition.

The Royals had an easier time of qualification as they ran-out group winners in Group H, amassing 13 points along the way. Four wins and a draw saw Reading through as they qualified ahead of second placed Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Stoke City to put their name in the hat for the next round.

Martin Kuhl’s side clocked up 4-1 wins over both Birmingham and Stoke City in qualification as they beat the Blues and Potters both home and away, as well as registering a 3-3 draw with Sheffield United in Yorkshire.

Middlesbrough have never progressed beyond the round-of-16 stage of the competition, losing 4-1 at home to Stoke back in 2014/15 on the only other occasion they have reached this stage of the tournament.

In last season’s format of the cup, the Teessiders crashed out of the tournament at the round of 32 stage going down 2-1 away to Huddersfield Town. Reading also exited the tournament at the same stage, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at home to Brentford.
