Danny: “Great attitude, great character, great fight”

Midfielder on parity at Craven Cottage

Reading midfielder Danny Williams was delighted with the attributes that his colleagues showed to earn a draw at Craven Cottage, meaning that the return leg of the play-off at Madejski Stadium on Tuesday will be a straight shoot-out for Wembley.

Jordan Obita drilled in low after Williams had initially won the ball back in midfield, but Tom Cairney netted a rebound just 12 minutes later.  Paul McShane’s high challenge resulted in a red card 10 minutes from time; the Royals’ 10 men saw out the game and added time with a stern defensive display.

“The boys showed great character again,” Danny said.  “We know that Fulham is a tough place to go to – we experienced that in the first half of the season.  So it’s a big compliment to the team.  Now it’s in our own hands to get it done on Tuesday.

“We dug deep after the red card; we didn’t concede after that and it shows just how great the character of the team is.

“I think we could have done a bit better on the counter, but if someone had told that we’d get a 1-1 draw before the game, I think we would have taken it.  We’re happy with the result and we’ll go on to Tuesday.

“Fulham are a great team with quality players, but we have quality players as well.  We’ve shown before that if we work hard and if everybody gives 100% or a bit more, then we can beat any team in this division.  When we don’t do that, we have tough games against anyone in the division.

“The boys showed great attitude, great character, great fight.  We’re happy with the result but nothing is done and I don’t think we should relax now.  It’s up to us to show great spirit again and great work-rate again – and we’ll see what happens.

“Everybody is looking forward to Tuesday.  When you’re in the play-offs, you want to win it.  We’ve overachieved so far this season and nobody expected us to be in the top six, and now that we have made it this far, we obviously want to go on and win.

“And a big compliment to our fans today – they were fantastic.  They pushed us on.”

We’ll need your support again on Tuesday when we return home to Madejski Stadium with the scores all square.  Make sure you’ve got your ticket and make it a special night!  Click here for all the details.
