Frenchman in the running for Championship awardWe’re very pleased to reveal that Reading striker Yann Kermorgant has been named on the shortlist for Sky Bet Player of the Month for April 2017!
And it’s a richly deserved nomination for a striker who played a key role in a pivotal month for the Royals.
7 games, 7 goals… not a bad return for the 35-year-old Frenchman! He’s taken his personal tally up to 17 for the season – equalling his best ever personal tally – and more importantly, his contributions helped to secure our spot in the play-offs with a game to spare.
The month began with his crisp hit against Leeds United at Madejski Stadium in front of the Sky cameras – the sole goal of the game earned the Royals all three points to leapfrog their play-off rivals in the Championship table.
And a sparkling month ended in similar fashion last Saturday… he met Garath McCleary’s delivery with a towering header to force home our winner against Wigan as we sewed up that top-six finish!
But as always, the Royals forward faces stiff competition for the monthly gong. Here’s a run-down of the three other players who are in contention for the prize…
John Brayford (Burton Albion)
Centre-half Brayford could be going up against Kermorgant this weekend – and the Sheffield United loanee’s battling spirit is one of the key reasons that the Brewers were able to secure their Championship status this term, having made numerous goal-line clearances and blocks throughout the month.
Stefan Johansen (Fulham)
One of the standout performers in a Cottagers side which ran riot in a number of games in April – Johansen’s tireless contributions and easy-on-the-eye technique were complemented by no less than four goals in the month from the midfielder… including two in a 4-1 victory at promotion rivals Huddersfield.
Glenn Murray (Brighton & Hove Albion)
Former Royals forward Murray netted opening goals in each of Brighton’s wins over Blackburn, Birmingham, QPR and Wigan as they earned promotion to the top tier. He currently stands on 22 goals for the campaign as the Seagulls aim to secure the league title this weekend at Aston Villa.
The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery.
The winner of the award will be announced on Friday 5th May.
