RFC Women defeated on first home outing against Chelsea

Royals beaten by Blues at Adams Park

Reading FC Women fell to a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea Ladies on their first home outing of the Spring Series at Adams Park.

The game was always going to be a tough prospect against last season’s WSL1 runners-up, and so it proved.  The Royals kept the game to within a goal until past the hour mark, but a flurry of second-half strikes sealed the win for the London club.

Norwegian defender Maren Mjelde rattled the woodwork early on for the Blues with a well-hit free-kick, but soon after the half-hour mark the Royals trailed to a well-placed Karen Carney header, as she steamed onto a right-flank cross.

Debutant Kirsty Linnett probed for an equaliser after being introduced from the bench at half-time with a couple of direct runs at the Chelsea defence – but she couldn’t force the leveller.

And instead Chelsea netted twice in quick succession to open up a three-goal lead – Drew Spence first firing in after a well-timed pass by Romana Bachman, and then sub Ji So-yun slammed home from close range just seconds after being introduced from the bench.

Hannah Blundell added some gloss to the scoreline with a late fourth – and the Royals couldn’t quite earn a consolatory goal in added time, as Kirsty McGee’s effort was hacked clear from the goal-line.
