Victory at Gillingham could see youngsters into the next round

The Royals' U21s go into Tuesday night's Checkatrade Trophy match at Gillingham still in with a chance of qualifying from their group and advancing in the competition.

Scott Marshall's side have been gaining valuable experience from the Trophy, testing themselves against seasoned senior Football League opposition.

The young Royals held Colchester United to a 2-2 draw in their first match of the groups, before losing out on penalties for the bonus point in the group.

This was followed by a sterling performance but, ultimately, the wrong result as Southend United ran out 1-0 winners against our youngsters at Roots Hall.

Our U21s can still qualify from Southern Group B with victory at Gillingham on Tuesday night, provided the specific circumstance that Colchester beat Southend on penalties after drawing in normal time.
