The Royals' U21s continue their campaign in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night against League One side, Southend United.
The Seasiders, who narrowly missed out on the League One play-offs last season, have won their last three matches in the league and will go into Tuesday night hoping to get off the mark in Southern Group B.
Phil Brown's side lost their first group stage game against Gillingham back in August, but the youthful Royals squad hope to further their chances of qualification from the group with victory.
Scott Marshall will be leading his young squad for the first time in the competition, having made a bright start as manager following his appointment last month.
A 2-2 draw at Colchester United for our U21s in their first match was followed by a 6-5 defeat in the subsequent penalty shootout, which gave the U's a bonus point in the group.
Sammie Szmodics opened the scoring for the U's on the night, before Josh Barrett and Ben House each netted in turn to put Reading ahead. A late goal by Eoin McKeown meant that the teams would take an initial point each, but Colchester took the bonus point on penalties.
However, the Royals still have ample opportunity to qualify from the group and three points at Roots Hall could send them top of the standings ahead of their final tie against Gillingham in November.
Tickets are available on the gate at Roots Hall for just £5 for Adults, £4 for Concessions and £1 for U16s, but please note that any ticket sales on the night are cash only in Southend.
