“It’s another big game,” said Jaap Stam ahead of our visit to Sheffield United on Saturday, who have made an impressive start to life back in the Championship.
“It was a good result against Leeds – a team that were doing well – but in how we played, we deserved our win.
“But as I said after the match, it’s just one game… we need to step up and maintain that level of playing and get results. That’s what we’ll be trying to do in Sheffield.
“We’re playing a good team who are in form. They have good players, they play on the front-foot with aggression, and they have quality on the ball as well. And you’ve seen the sorts of results that they have picked up from the beginning of the season. They’re an impressive team and they want to keep their flow going. But we want a result as well.
“They brought some new players in as well, but last year they had a fantastic season. You have a certain feeling when you go into the new league, and you want to show yourself again and do well. That’s what they have done and it’s a big compliment to them in how they have been performing.”
Indeed, the Blades’ early-season form has been eye-catching. After earning promotion from League 1 last year, the South Yorkshire side have been one of the front-runners in the early going in pursuit of a Premier League place.
“We’ve studied them and shown the players clips of how they want to play and their setup,” Jaap continued. “You want to prevent them from doing certain things, and that’s probably how they look at us as well. That’s the kind of thing that makes football very interesting.
“We need to look at our own strengths as well and what we can do against a team like that. That’s what we’ll be doing this week and hopefully we can do well.
“It’s a great stadium, a big crowd, fans behind their team and especially because of how they have been doing. They’ll have the support again and we need to make sure they don’t succeed in what they want to do.”
