New Royals' Under-23's manager Scott Marshall hopes to help the youngsters in our Academy improve, and knock on the door of the First Team this season!

Omar Richards, Danny Loader, Sam Smith, Andy Rinomhota and Axel Andresson have all made their debuts in the First Team this season, an achievement Marshall hopes to build on over the season.

Having spent a bit of time in the role, Marshall says he's relishing the challenge of learning from other coaches at the club and putting his own stamp on his side.

“I’m really enjoying it," Marshall said. "It’s great to be working out on the grass every day and working with some good people and building relationships in a good club.

“There’s so much for me to learn and pick up, there are some great coaches here at the club so I’m in a fortunate position where I’m going to pick up some things and learn and improve, which is what we all want to do! I’m looking forward to all of that."

Marshall also revealed the help that new First Team Coach, Michael Gilkes, has been giving him in getting used to his new surroundings and place to work.

“Michael’s been fantastic with helping me settle in, we know each other pretty well so it’s been great having somebody there to ask any questions to, if I need to find anything out.

“He’s been fantastic for us so far, it was good to see him after the game as well and give him a wee pat on the back to say well done, so it was good."

The former Aston Villa man has laid out his plans for his time in the role, and he hopes to see even more youngsters get in and around the senior squad with the Royals.

“The focus is always on improving the players, them getting better. If we can win some matches along the way the boys will be happy, we’ll all be happy," Marshall added.

“But, the main thing is we get players improving and push them on in their careers, and hopefully they get in and around the first team group.

“I’m looking forward to the coming weeks and months, and building on what we’re doing every day and keeping improving.”
