Clement assesses squad fitness ahead of season opener

2 August 2018

Reading vs Derby County
Friday 3rd August
8pm kick-off
Sky Bet Championship
Madejski Stadium

All the talk of pre-season and getting prepared for the new campaign can now finish. On Friday at 8pm in RG2, the first competitive ball of the EFL season will be kicked - and it all starts to matter again.

With six weeks of training and friendlies under their belts, the Royals will now face Derby County for the first available points of the season.

For opposing manager Frank Lampard, it will be his first ever competitive match in charge of the club he took over in the summer.

He will be against a familiar face in Paul Clement, with the Reading manager having coached him while the pair were at Chelsea.

The last three matches between the teams have produced 17 goals between them (nine for Reading, eight for Derby) - and the Sky Sports cameras will be in town as the new Championship season gets underway.

There's a good chance several of our new signings will be making competitive debuts for the Royals, including latest signing Sam Baldock - who hopes to be involved after arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday.

Clement confirmed that John O'Shea, Anssi Jaakkola, Chris Gunter and Dave Edwards are all injury absentees for Friday's game, with Tyler Blackett serving a suspension carried over from last season.

With all the pre-season excitement boiling down into what really matters on Friday night, make sure you're here to back the boys and make some noise in the 2018-19 season!
