Full-time: Reading 2-0 Birmingham City!

The Royals are through to the Second Round of the Carabao Cup after goals from Meite and Swift.

The draw for the next round is on Thursday.

Birmingham still throwing men forward, a shot comes in on the turn but Walker comfortably gathers for the Royals.

Now into added time here in RG2 - and there will be four minutes of it.

Great save Sam Walker!

Birmingham press on and Reading can't quite clear their lines. The ball breaks for Che Adams in the area, he's left one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Walker makes himself big and cuts out the danger.

The ball is played back in and O'Shea sticks a leg in to stop a Birmingham shot.

Reading get forward once more, with McNulty this time finding Yiadom in the area.

The full-back cuts inside on his left foot to strike, but this shot goes over the bar.

Final sub for the Royals, John O'Shea comes on for his Reading debut, with goalscorer Yakou Meite going off.

Reading looking to keep the bal as much as possible to try and see this one out, limiting Birmingham as much as they can on the ball.

A substitution for the Royals, as Academy graduate Andy Rinomhota comes on for his third senior appearance - replacing Leandro Bacuna.

John Swift steps up to take the free-kick, bends it perfectly over the wall and into the top corner!

2-0 to the Royals!

Baldock is brought down outside the area and wins a free-kick - tries to cheekily take it quickly but the referee pulls it back to be re-taken...

Omar Bogle also leaves the field for Birmingham, replaced by Che Adams.

An attacking pair of substitutions for Blues, who still trail the Royals 1-0.

First change for Blues, as Jota comes on for Connor Mahoney.

Chance at the other end!

McNulty gets forward into a dangerous area, picks a pass across goal to Baldock waiting 12 yards out - just out of his reach. Very good chance for the Royals!

Birmingham have their best chance of the match as Harding gets a cross in.

Viv Solomon-Otabor is there four yards out, but somehow puts his header over the bar.

Birmingham are starting to put the pressure on...

Mahoney finds space again on the edge of the box, he shoots left-footed but drags it wide of Sam Walker's near post.

Mahoney hangs up a cross for Birmingham, Reading partially clear with Kieftenbeld on the charge - but he blasts a shot well over the bar.

A corner is swung in for the Royals, Ilori gets under it and Meite loops an effort at goal...

Lee Camp is under it, though, and claims the high ball.

Great chance!

Swift dances through midfield with fantastic footwork, spreads wide to Meite - whose left-footed shot is deflected behind for a corner - cleared by Birmingham.

We're back underway for the second half here!

The Royals currently lead 1-0 under the lights in RG2 as darkness descends.

HALF-TIME: Reading 1-0 Birmingham City

A fantastic effort from Yakou Meite separates the teams as they go in for the break.

45 more minutes to come!

McNulty slides another slick pass through towards Baldock, who gets put off kilter and Birmingham clear their lines.

Five added minutes at the end of the half here - the Royals hold a 1-0 lead as it stands.

We're back underway with the Royals hoping to consolidate their lead before the break...

Leandro Bacuna is down receiving treatment after a hefty tackle from Kieftenbeld, there will be a few added minutes at the end of the half here.

Birmingham have a free-kick just outside the Reading area...

Mahoney steps up and loops a shot over the wall, it's dipping but Walker had it covered and the ball goes behind.

Some lovely passing in midfield between plenty of Reading players here.

The ball works its way to Méïte on the right, who turns his back and does brilliantly to keep it in - but he's put off-balance as he crosses and the ball goes for a goal kick.

Birmingham get forward again as they look for an equaliser.

Connor Mahoney gets space on the left of the area, shooting low and forcing Sam Walker into a smart save to palm around the post.

It looks like it's going to be an early change for Reading, with Mo Barrow forced off with an injury.

Pelle Clement comes on in his place for his first appearance of the season.

Birmingham enjoy their first extended spell of possession, and it breaks for Gardner 25 yards out to shoot - driving his effort over the bar.

Gap in play here as Mo Barrow and Gary Gardner both receive medical attention, but both players are back up and look fit to carry on - although Barrow is trying to shake off a limp.

His goal separates the sides at the moment...

And a lovely finish it was from Yakou after 10 minutes of this cup tie!

Barrow gets space again on the left, tries to hang up a cross in the area but it's over everyone and out for a throw.

First yellow card of the game goes to Birmingham's Gary Gardner, after scything down Bacuna in midfield.

Reading controlling the tempo nicely after going a goal ahead, keeping the ball and trying to open Birmingham up for another chance.

Yakou Méïte scores his first of the season!

McNulty threads a lovely ball through to split the defence, and Méïte slams a finish into the bottom corner!

Baldock and McNulty are playing a high line up front for the Royals, looking to hassle the defence every chance they get.

Goalless after 10 minutes, both sides sussing each other out so far...

Mo Barrow gets his first sight of clear space tonight, driving on and squaring to Leandro Bacuna on the edge of the area - who fluffs his lines and his shot sails over.

Beryly Lubala finds space 25 yards out for Birmingham...

His shot has plenty of venom on it - but it's yards wide of Sam Walker's goal.

Sam Baldock tries to jink his way into the Birmingham area, he lets fly but the defender gets a block in.

Bright start from the Royals!

Here we go!

Remember, there have been several rule changes to the Carabao Cup this season...

Extra time is longer applicable, so a draw at full-time will see the tie go straight to penalties!

Shootouts have returned to their traditional 'ABAB' format, after trialling 'ABBA' last season.

Sam Walker and Marc McNulty make their RG2 debuts tonight...

This means that 250 players have pulled on the blue and white hoops since Madejski Stadium opened in 1998!
