The calibre of the opposition was top flight and the goals scored had a touch of class, but Royals manager Paul Clement was honest in his assessment of our performance in tonight's Carabao Cup defeat.
"The manner of the defeat is disappointing; I think we can do a lot better than that.
"The first goal was a disappointing one. We had the ball in a decent area; the ball turned over, and the next moment they’re tapping it in from three or four yards. That’s a disappointing goal to go against us.
"And there's no doubt we made a lot of mistakes tonight. Too many.
"You could say that a team from the level above forces you into those mistakes, but I think it was more of our own doing.
"When four, five, six players are not having their A-game, it becomes a big test.
"So I’m disappointed that we didn’t do better, because I know the team are capable of giving more.
"And in the end it was a comfortable victory for them. We pushed a bit at the end, but that’s normal – when you’re 2-0 down you throw a few men forward.
"We want to do well in every game we play, whoever the opponent, whatever the challenge, home or away.
"So I’m disappointed in the manner of the defeat, but at the same time it’s important that we recover quickly.
"It’s a quick turnaround and we have an important game here on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday and we have to do everything we can to get the victory."
