Marc McNulty says he's ready for more minutes after making his Royals debut at the weekend.
The summer arrival came off the bench in the second half away at Nottingham Forest, and he hopes to add to his game time when Birmingham visit Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night.
With several changes to the line-up expected, some Royals will get the chance will get the chance to impress in Carabao Cup action against Blues in RG2.
On the challenge of the cup, McNulty said: “It’ll be great if the manager picks me to start on Tuesday – it would be brilliant to get my first start for the club.
“It’s sometimes nice to get away from the league and into the cup but regardless, you go into all games wanting to win and it’s no different on Tuesday.
“For myself, if the manager picks me I’m ready to go.
“You see it every year that a lot of the managers change their team from league to cup, it’s to get the boys who have not played in the league some minutes so, when they are called upon, they’re feeling fit and ready.
"If the gaffer does that on Tuesday, it’ll be great for the whole squad."
Having made the step up to Championship level from League Two, McNulty says he enjoying his new challenge and relishing the new tests he'll face.
“For me, it’s a whole new league – playing against players I’ve never played against before, so it’s exciting," he added.
“It keeps you a bit on edge, it makes you focus more and it’s exciting for me to come up against new teams.
“The team here has probably played against these players a lot so they’ll know what to expect, but it’s an exciting game and it’s one the boys are looking forward to getting out there and getting a win."
