David Meyler gave a frank assessment of the Royals' performance, following a 1-0 defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
Yanic Wildschut's goal early in the second half was the difference between the teams on the day, and Meyler says the Royals have to get points on the board against Blackburn in the week.
"We're bitterly disappointed - we're very annoyed. But we can't just make excuses, that's three games we've lost - we won in the cup but it just hasn't been good enough from ourselves, the players.
"We need to do more defensively and offensively, we've scored one goal in three games which just isn't good enough.
"We need a good, long, hard look at ourselves and then focus on Blackburn. The fortunate thing about the Championship is that there are so many games - we've got 43 left so there's plenty of time, but we need to start straight away.
"We want to be challenging for promotion and the way we're playing isn't up to that.
"You create your own luck in front of goal. We're getting into areas but we need to move the ball quicker and be more decisive. We're annoyed, frustrated and I certainly didn't come here to lose games.
"To lose the first three is so frustrating, we need to do more but we've got a game on Wednesday and we've got to put it right there.
"These games are coming thick and fast, we're all together, we know what we want to achieve. Yes, there have been good phases but we need to put it together for 90 minutes.
"We need to be solid at the back but we need to be creative up front, we've got to focus hard and work harder. That's the only way I can put it."
