Five added minutes at the end of the game for the Royals to salvage a result.

Tyler Blackett with a mistimed tackle on Jordan Hugill near the corner flag, booked.

For the second time, a hand-ball by Boro in their own area is unpunished.

McCleary gets onto the end of a cross by Swift and an outstretched arm blocks his volley, but the referee waves away the claim.

Final change.  Jón Daði Böðvarsson comes on in place of Omar Richards.

On comes Garath McCleary, replacing Josh Sims.  He has the final eight minutes plus added time to try and help get a result for the Royals.

John Swift is dumped to ground by Saville and the Middlesbrough man is booked.

Goal - 1-0 to Boro.  A harsh reflection on the action thus far as McNair finds himself with space on the right and drives into the area, squaring for George Friend to hammer in from 12 yards.

Andy Rinomhota takes one for the team.  The Royals are robbed of possession in midfield and a tactical foul on George Saville halts the break, but earns a booking.

Big cries of hand-ball... not given!

Bacuna controls and shoots and his shot appeared to strike a Boro arm en route to goal, but the ref waves away the claims!

Scott Marshall makes his first amendment - John Swift replaces Danny Loader.

Hugill's first contribution is to force Blackett to make a goal-saving header - the striker was oh-so-close to getting on the end of Friend's delivery but the Royals man made a terrific defensive header.

Josh Sims getting stuck in.

Double sub for Boro - that's all three changes made for Tony Pulis' side.  Off come Besic and Assombalonga, and on come Jordan Hugill and Lewis Wing.

The Royals are doing all of the attacking at the moment and Boro are feeding on scraps.  Sims meets a Bacuna corner but it pings off his forehead and wide of target.

Another bold run from Andy Rinomhota, who rides a challenge as George Saville tries to hack away at his heels.  A defence-splitting pass is towards Baldock but he just runs out of room on the edge of the area.

Andy Rinomhota in the thick of the action.

The towering figure of Aden Flint meets an inswinging corner, but he generates no substantial power and Jaakkola gathers with a minimum of fuss.

Less than a minute after the restart, Bacuna goes close!

He traps Barrow's pass well and shifts onto his left foot... from a tight angle, a deflected strike is straight at Randolph, who collects.

The teams are back out of the tunnel... and Boro get the second half underway.  0-0 as we get going again.

Come on URZ!

HALF-TIME | Reading 0-0 Middlesbrough

No goals, but a good half from the Royals.

Yiadom the next to have a chance but his shot is shanked high and wide.  Some great football on display to fashion the chance as Sims lays off but the opportunity is missed.

Omar Richards comes close to opening the scoring!

He steps forward and gets the ball out of his feet and strikes well - it's through the crowd, but Randolph palms wide!

And Boro also have the first booking of the game.  There was only one way that Muhamed Besic was going to stop Andy Rinomhota, who had burst down half the length of the pitch - that was by chopping him down unfairly.

First change of the game as a Boro man picks up an injury.  Ryan Shotton can't continue so Paddy McNair steps in.

Almost a chance for a Royals opener as the ball breaks for Loader on the edge of a busy Boro box, but he fires his volleyed effort into the ground and it bounces through safely to Randolph.

Not much to test either goalkeeper at the moment, but Reading back in control of the ball again and the bumper festive crowd are getting right behind their side!

Shotton has the ball in the net - but he's flagged offside.  The defender was one of several in red shirts to go too soon as the free-kick was whipped in so celebrations are cut short.

Andy Yiadom getting forward in support of a Royals attack.

Excellent defending by Andy Yiadom.  Boro having the better of the play at the moment, and a deep cross from the Middlesbrough right needed a well-timed header at the far post by the Royals full-back to take it out for a corner.  He arrives a split second before George Friend.

Gabriel Osho has a tough task on his hands on his debut today as he looks to stop Britt Assombalonga from having an impact.  And he does well to keep pace with the forward, force him wide, and a combination of Osho and goalkeeper Jaakkola keep his shot at bay.

A cross comes in from the left and Boro get a shot away - but Richards is being fouled anyway and the ref blows up.  A bit of danger but dealt with. Goalless so far.

Boro are growing into the game after seeing off some early pressure.  A few corners have been put into the mixer but Reading have managed to scramble clear so far.

The Royals fashion a terrific early chance, but Sam Baldock is foiled at the last by goalkeeper Darren Randolph!  Josh Sims and Danny Loader combined and striker Baldock, who netted against Rotherham last time out, was close to grabbing another.  A firm strike, kept out by an outstretched leg.

We're underway! The Royals will shoot towards the South Stand in the first period.

Here come the teams!  Minutes away from getting going at Madejski Stadium.
