Jaap prepared to battle for back-to-back wins

Gaffer analyses Millwall’s threats ahead of Madejski match

2 February 2018

Saturday’s match against Millwall offers the Royals a chance to register consecutive wins – it’ll need another battling performance from Jaap Stam’s side, after a physical encounter in midweek against Burton.

Millwall, likewise, aren’t shy when it comes to a bit of rough and tumble – but our boys were up for the battle at the Pirelli and Jaap knows the same is needed this weekend.

“We know how they play – we’ve seen them already,” Stam said.  “It’s a big game at home and because of how they’re performing and how they’re doing, it isn’t going to be easy to beat them.

“But we’re playing at home and hopefully the fans can give us the support again like they did against Burton, and hopefully we can get the result.”

Reading were looking in good shape to take the win earlier this campaign against the Lions at the Den as Dave Edwards opened his account – but a quickfire double in the last 10 minutes turned the game on its head.

That is, as they say, football.  But Jaap is keen to avoid such a turnaround this weekend – he’s confident that the Royals will be able to convert any advantage that they register.

“We were 1-0 up over there in Millwall and hoping to win the game, but in how they play and with the physique they have, they made it difficult for us and they managed to score two goals,” he continued.  “We’ll want to avoid that on Saturday!

“There hadn’t been many problems for us in that game, but towards the end they scored their equaliser from nothing – and then they grab a second one, and we lose the game!

“That’s a bit like how Championship football is.  We’ve experienced that this season but hopefully we can do well on Saturday.”
