Reading’s Under-18s will visit Charlton Athletic in the FA Youth Cup fourth round on Tuesday 16th January, kicking off at 7pm at Welling United’s Park View Road.
It’ll be our second game of this year’s tournament – we hosted Millwall in the third round, and goals by Danny Loader and Ayo Faniyan were enough to secure passage to the next stage.
It was an eventual match - a missed penalty for the Royals, a red card for either side... and ultimately the right result at Madejski Stadium.
By contrast, it’ll be the Addicks’ fourth fixture – after defeating Whitehawk at the first-round stage, Exeter City and Queens Park Rangers each fell to the London club to set up this date.
The Royals have a decent recent history in the competition – no less the semi-final appearance against Fulham in 2014, as well as a visit Chelsea at the quarter-final stage in 2016.
Charlton were also within a whisker of lifting the trophy back in 1987, only for Coventry City to pip them 2-1 over two legs in the final… although the Charlton youth squad from that era have long since retired from senior action, of course!
If you’re free, come along to Welling to see David Dodds’ youngsters in action – and hopefully help cheer them into the fifth round.
Ticket information will be released for this fixture in due course.
