Goalscorer Gunter on ‘a different kind of performance’

Royals man reflects on win in Burton

“It’s a nice feeling, I don’t get it very often!” said Chris Gunter, having registered just his fourth goal for the Royals – and it was a critical one too, to re-establish a lead against Burton as he put in a plum finish from a corner routine. “But most importantly it was a very good performance and a very good win.

“After feeling quite comfortable and then they got a penalty, it was an important time to score and bounce back.

“We do work on pulling the ball back to the edge of the box if it’s on… it’s not really meant to be me!  It was good thinking from Bacuna to see it.  It’s something we work on as a team, although not me specifically!

“It was just important to get a good contact – there were a lot of bodies in between.  Regardless of who scored tonight, it was important.”

The Brewers weren’t afraid to go long – the Royals needed to match their aerial bombardment and stand up to the challenge.  They did that, and triumphed!

“We knew we had to come and put in a performance – probably a different kind of performance than people are used to seeing from us, and to get the three points,” Gunter continued.

“We did that, and it was a good place to be in the changing room.  We’ll recover quickly, because we want to make it back-to-back wins on Saturday.

“We knew it was going to be like that.  We needed to do that side of the game – we knew if we could do that, then the quality we have in the team would create chances and we did that and scored three good goals.

“So we’ll enjoy the bus ride home, but we’re in tomorrow and it’s important that we build straight away for Saturday.  We’ve been talking about momentum and it’s a good chance for us to do it.”

And he put in a word on the forwards – Jón Daði Böðvarsson and Yann Kermorgant worked tirelessly, and the former’s brace took him to eight for the campaign since his summer arrival.

“Yann and Jón were very good – they occupied their back three very well.  When they play well and they use their strength, they win their headers and hold the ball up, they give the team a base to build from.

“To be honest, they’ve been doing that for a while.  We haven’t been creating as many chances for them – but they have shown that when we create chances for them, they can take them.

"More than the goals, their contribution to the team is bigger than that – everyone knows that.  They played well and across the pitch we all played well, as we have for a while.  But it was nice to get three goals and three points.”
