A winner of the FA Cup in his playing days, Royals boss Jaap Stam is targeting a place in round four of this year’s competition when Stevenage visit Madejski Stadium on Tuesday.
The Boro forced a goalless stalemate at the Lamex Stadium and therefore a midweek replay; the winner will visit either Sheffield Wednesday or Carlisle United.
“The league is the most important thing for us, of course, but if you play a game then you want to win it!” said Stam. “You do everything for it.
“It’s always nice to do well in the FA Cup and to get as far as you can. Eventually if you go through you can get drawn against bigger teams and then you want to get results against them – that’s a confidence boost as well.
“You never know where you could end up. It brings something extra for the club and for the fans. Everybody is aware of that – the FA Cup isn’t a competition that we put on the side; it’s a big competition which we want to take part in and get results.”
Plenty of other Championship sides have slipped on banana skins already this season; beating the Boro is by no means a given, especially based on how they battled at Broadhall Way.
“They made it difficult for us in Stevenage and they tried to get to the next stage there – that’s what League 2 teams are doing against bigger teams,” Jaap continued.
“We know the quality and physique they have and what they can bring to the game. We’re well aware of that and we’ll need to deal with that at times a bit better, especially when we have possession and chances to go forward, and hopefully to score goals.
“We’ll need to look at the players and who can play – we might need to make a couple of changes, but everybody in the squad wants to play and to show themselves. This is an opportunity for them as well to play and to get a result.”
