All the plaudits went the way of Jón Daði Böðvarsson on Tuesday evening after his hat-trick – but he passed that praise on to the team around him.
In particular, Chris Gunter – making his 250th appearance for the Royals and leading the team out as captain – got name-checked after claiming all three assists!
“You can’t ask for anything more than to score a hat-trick – and to win as well especially, for the confidence for me and the team in general,” said the Icelander.
“I have to give a compliment to Chris Gunter – he got three assists for me! It’s a team effort – I scored the three goals, but I’m glad that I have good teammates around me to help me score them. It’s a good feeling.
“The first was a simple finish really as the ball came to the far post; for the second one I got my head around it and tried to get as much power on it as possible, and thankfully it went in!
“And for the third one, those are my favourite type of goals – they’re the simplest ones when your teammate puts it on a silver plate for you.”
But the focus now switches to league action… we’re back at Madejski Stadium this weekend, hosting Brentford.
And that’s where his priorities lie – preparation for our meeting with the Bees and a chance to get the points tally ticking again.
“Hopefully we can go far in the cup – it’s beautiful to go far in the cup and hopefully go all the way,” he continued.
“You never know – it’s just one game at a time and every game is a final, and we want to go as far as we can.
“But this game is finished and first and foremost we need to focus on the league now.
“I’m happy to help the team out and now I’m focused on next Saturday against Brentford. It’s a very important game – whether I start or now, I’ll put everything into the game and do my best.”
