U18s make it successive wins with Leicester triumph

Youngsters take U18 PL victory at Foxes’ expense

22 January 2018

The Royals’ Under-18 side followed up their FA Youth Cup win in midweek with a league triumph against Leicester City on Saturday, triumphing 3-1 at Hogwood.

Reading could have led as early as two minutes into the game after Ayo Faniyan was felled in the box, but Jakub Stolarczyk made a penalty save for the young Foxes.

But Khalid Simmo slotted in at the back post midway through the first half, before Faniyan finished emphatically from a similar position to double the advantage.

Leicester were given a lifeline when Alassane Meite capitalised on a mix-up at the back, meaning that the Royals would go into the break with the slenderest of leads.

But the Royals killed the momentum of their visitors and Charlie Lawrence’s bending effort from outside the area was enough to put the game out of sight and ensure the that points would remain in Berkshire.

Under-18 manager David Dodds said: “Leicester fielded a team with quite a few players from their Youth Cup squad, so we knew that it would be a difficult fixture as they always give us a very good game.

“They came at us quickly and we had to withstand some early pressure, and then we scored a couple of good goals.  We were looking comfy at two goals up but it was a bit of a mix-up at the back before the break which gave them a bit of air and let them back into the game.

“However the boys were able to stop their momentum and it was a really good goal by Charlie Lawrence – a real bending effort into the top corner – which helped us to see the game off.

“It was a pleasing result after the Youth Cup win in midweek, and a lot of credit must go to Ryan Williams, who worked alongside Mikele Leigertwood during the week to prepare the boys for the game.”
