The Royals’ Under-23 squad have eight friendly fixtures scheduled during the pre-season programme as they prepare for the 2018/19 campaign – beginning with a visit to meet Bath City at Twerton Park this Saturday.
Scott Marshall’s youngsters will be competing in the Premier League 2 Division 2 in the upcoming season, but before then they will make four journeys for friendly games, as well as hosting another four behind closed doors at Hogwood. Six of those games come against lower-league senior sides, and two are against fellow U23 sides.
Training with the U23 squad and pushing for places will be the seven individuals who signed their first pro contracts this summer, graduating from their two-year scholarship with the Under-18s.
The fixture against National League South side Bath City this Saturday has been brought forward to a 1pm kick-off – like the first-team’s trip to Wimbledon, there won’t be a conflict of interests should England make the World Cup quarter-final.
Then their division rivals Wealdstone visit Hogwood Park on the evening of Wednesday 11th July, before visiting a visit to Slough Town at Arbour Park on Saturday 14th July – the Rebels are also preparing for a season in the National League South in the upcoming campaign after being promoted from the Southern League.
A midweek meeting with Sky Bet League 2 side Cheltenham Town follows on Tuesday 17th July as Gary Johnson brings his side to Hogwood – but then there is a bit of a break in the schedule.
And when football resumes on Saturday 28th July, our U23s will contest two games simultaneously – one group of players will head to National League side Ebbsfleet United, while another visit Bostik League Premier outfit Leatherhead in a pair of 3pm kick-offs.
Rounding off the pre-season schedule are consecutive games at Hogwood against Under-23 representatives sides – first comes Swansea City U23 on Saturday 4th August, then Charlton Athletic U23 follow on Monday 6th August.
