After two defeats in pre-season, the Royals registered a well-earned draw against top-tier opponents in the form of Fulham – a result which Tyler Blackett believes reflects the progression that the team is making.
The defender completed 60 minutes in searing heat in Aldershot, and put in a hearty display to match.
“You can see that the work we’re doing is beginning to pay off,” Tyler said. “We’re trying hard and we’re getting better each day.
“Each game is a progression. Hopefully we can get better and be ready for the start of the season.
“We have built up a bit of a rivalry with Fulham over the last couple of years! They gave us a tough test, and we did alright.
“They are a team that like to play – and so do we. It was a good challenge defensively.
“Every week is a progression. I’m getting better each week, and the team is too. It’s all about progressing to be ready for the start of the season.”
After the Saturday-afternoon draw, it was a bright and early start for the Royals on Sunday morning as they embarked on their trip to Austria for their pre-season camp.
Blackett knows full well what kind of benefits can be wrought from spending a protracted spell in each other’s company – as well as the opportunity to play against high-level opposition in the shape of Beşiktaş and Rubin Kazan.
“It will be a great week for the boys,” he continued. “It’s a chance to come together and get some good work done, and to get closer as a team as well.
“We’ll be spending more hours together; we’ll learn more about each other as a team and as people as well. Hopefully that will help us work better on the pitch.
“The games will be another step up in their level, and we’ll be ready for the challenge.”
