Reading Football Club can announce that promising young full-back Tennai Watson has agreed to spend the 2018-19 campaign on loan at AFC Wimbledon, putting pen to paper today on a season-long stay at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
The 21-year-old defender promised his long-term future to the Royals earlier this year when he signed a three-year contract with the club and, after a year of illness and injury last season, the Royals will now closely monitor his progress in League One as a Don.
Watson is one of 47 players who have now emerged from the Academy ranks to make their first team breakthrough at Reading – Tennai took his bow as a replacement for Jordan Obita in the second half of a home win over Preston North End on the opening day of the 2016-17 season.
His first start followed three days later in a 2-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Cup and he went on to make 4(+3) first team appearances that season, including a cup start against Arsenal at The Emirates and a league win over Huddersfield Town.
He worked extremely hard to bounce back from injury setbacks last season and now he will aim to impress under Neal Ardley – AFC Wimbledon retained their League One status with an 18th-placed finish last season and kicked off their summer schedule with a friendly win over the Royals last weekend.
We would like to wish Tennai the very best of luck during his loan spell in League One.
