Full-back reflects on Palace defeat

The Royals were on the receiving end of a 4-0 scoreline when Crystal Palace came to town for our final pre-season friendly fixture – new recruit Andy Yiadom was pleased to make his home debut and to learn some valuable lessons against their Premier Leagueopponents.

The Eagles took an Alexander Sorloth goal into the break; after the interval, Wilfried Zaha added two before James Tomkins rounded off the scoring.  Not the result the Royals were looking for, but they’ll be better for the experience of another challenging fixture.

“First of all it was good to get a first game here at our home ground,” Yiadom said.  “It’s a nice pitch, a nice ground, and I’m looking forward to playing here a lot more.

“But Crystal Palace were a tough opponent.  Everyone put in a shift and we got a lot out of it physically, but Palace were a really good team.

“You’re not going to come across a player like Wilfried Zaha week-in, week-out in the Championship!  But it’s a good test to play against the Premier League standard – you learn a lot.

“Their players are quick, strong, good technically and they scored a few good goals.  We’ll look back at the game; there were a few good bits and a few bits we can improve on.”

The new campaign is on the horizon now.  The 2018-19 campaign begins right here in RG2 – our Friday-night fixture against Derby County marks the start of the new season, where the tallies are reset and fresh hope abounds.

“We want to go into the new season with a good start,” continued the full-back.  “Everyone is looking forward to it – Friday night, under the lights on Sky… hopefully everyone is up for it and we can put a performance in.

“Me and most of the boys are well prepared physically.  Everyone is feeling fit and looking forward to the first game of the season – the one that counts!

“Every game is tough in the Championship but we’re looking forward to that challenge.  We’re going to put 100% in.

“Each day we learn new things when we come in and we’re going to try to put that into action when it comes to matchday.”
