Football to Amsterdam… it’s the biggest ride in football! And four Reading FC staff were on the road earlier this month to help raise crucial funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
On Friday 1st June, hundreds of football supporters from up and down the country set off from the Lee Valley VeloPark in Stratford and Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium, with pedal power being pushed to the limit. Amongst the number leaving from London were Tom Law, Leigh Morgan, Richard Dorman and Graham Griffin… all wearing their custom Reading FC cycle jerseys!
They were also joined by Matthew Paterson-Borland, a Royals supporter and Season Ticket-holder, who was wearing the famous blue and white hoops for the journey too.
After an 85-mile slog from Stratford to Harwich on Day 1 – with a few stops along the way to refuel, take in some lunch, and to reapply some suncream! – the guys made their way to the ferry terminal to set sail for the Hook of Holland.
And after some overnight rest aboard the boat to the Netherlands, it was another early start to disembark, pick up the bikes and get going again on Day 2.
While the terrain, climbs and distance were somewhat kinder on the continent for the second day, that was somewhat offset by a few aches and pains (and saddle sores) picked up on this side of the Channel!
But it was a smooth ride in to the Dutch capital in the PCUK jerseys – the Royals representatives rolled up to the Amsterdam ArenA on Saturday afternoon and celebrated with a well-earned beer!
A big thank-you must go to everyone who supported the Royal riders on their trip – especially those who helped them past their £4,000 target for fundraising.
It’s not too late to donate, either – head to justgiving.com/teams/royals2amsterdam2018 to make a donation to Prostate Cancer UK to help relegate the disease and stop prostate cancer being a killer.
